There was a big emphasis on using scholarly sources for my capstone project, so most of my research comes from journals. I had used GALILEO, a database provided by the school, to find articles before, but this is the first project I’ve ever used journals for, which made me feel like I was working on the cutting edge. The government agency DARPA was also a great source of information, being on the real cutting edge of machine learning and having informational videos about it. My interview with Adam Farkas was helpful as well, though I focused more on career questions and less on Machine Learning.
I don’t completely understand scholarly journals, but I’m pretty sure they are written by professors or grad students or other people who do research and share it with everyone. For the most part, these journals didn’t seem to have any probable bias. (The only article I found with a definite Kurzweilian message was pretty easy to spot and avoid.) Articles from journals are also really up to date, most of the material I found was from only a month or so ago, many times more recent than material I’m used to working with in class.
The DARPA videos were a great resource and sped up my work a lot when I found them. DARPA is a government agency that sponsors robotics research, and has become involved in artificial intelligence research as a result of this work. The videos were a great break from the slower pace of the journals, and they described ML concepts in simpler words.
